Maths
Mathematics is taught through a variety of fun, purposeful interactive and child centered activities, both as stand alone lessons and as an integral part of play. Children from Years 1 and 2 have clearly set out learning objectives for maths as outlined in the National Curriculum.
As schools we are on a journey to Maths Mastery with the Sussex Maths Hub. Maths Mastery is defined by the NCETM as 'pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject’.
The phrase 'teaching for mastery' describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.
At Hertford Schools we endeavor to:
-develop confident mathematicians who can talk about their learning using key vocabulary and stem sentences
-develop independent mathematicians who can select resources to support their mathematical thinking
-provide children with a solid understanding of key mathematical concepts
-provide challenge to take children’s understanding deeper
