Maths
We teach mathematics using fun, interactive, and child-focused activities. These take place both in dedicated lessons and as part of play.
We are working towards Maths Mastery with the Sussex Maths Hub. The NCETM says Maths Mastery means pupils gain a deep, lasting, and flexible understanding of maths.
'Teaching for mastery' means using classroom methods and school organisation that help pupils succeed in maths.
At Hertford Primary School, we aim to:
- develop confident mathematicians who can talk about their learning using key vocabulary and stem sentences
- encourage children to work independently and choose resources that support their maths thinking
- give children a strong understanding of important maths ideas
- offer challenges that help children deepen their understanding
Children in Years 1 to 6 follow clear maths learning goals set out in the National Curriculum.
The curriculum includes:
- Number and place value, such as ordering, comparing, and rounding numbers
- Calculation, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with larger numbers
- Fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Measurement: lengths (m/cm/mm); mass (kg/g); volume/capacity & measurement, including length (m/cm/mm), mass (kg/g), volume and capacity (l/ml), and time: bar charts, line graphs, pictograms, and tables
We regularly assess children to track their progress. Support is given during maths lessons and at other times, such as pre-teaching for some groups, to help children do well. Our teaching assistants also help, and some children work in small groups or one-to-one with trained staff.
